Foaling: When to Call the Vet

Always have your vet’s number posted or saved somewhere that is quickly and easily accessible.

While most foaling go on perfectly well unassisted there are times when you need the vet immediately.

The issues below require immediate assistance from your vet:

  • If the jennet appears to be straining for more than an hour and you are seeing nothing
  • If there is only one leg in the birth canal
  • If the hooves are sole-up, you may have a breech presentation
  • Red bag deliveries usually don’t have time to call – get the baby out then call the vet
  • Placental tissue, but not the foal
  • Weak or listless jennet
  • Weak or underdeveloped foal
  • Any other situation you feel is “not right” – it’s much better to have the vet come and discover a problem early than to have problems later on
